One year of 7 Steel UK: building the future of steelmaking in Cardiff
April 10, 2026

The past 12 months – and the first year of 7 Steel UK – have been transformational for the UK’s steel industry. Global challenges have reshaped domestic steelmaking, and while that has presented significant challenges right across the sector, it has also presented opportunities for the future.

From our Cardiff foundations, where Electric Arc Furnace technology sits at the centre of our steelmaking capability, we have been focussed on strengthening our operations to secure a stronger future for our customers and the broader UK steel industry. That has meant growing our recycling operations, unifying our service teams under 7 Steel Service and continuing yo invest in our people. And while we’re looking towards the future, we’re proud to already be demonstrating what the future of British steelmaking looks like.

One year on from taking the reins at one of the UK’s best established steel production facilities, we reflect on what we’ve achieved so far – and what the future holds for 7 Steel UK.

The future of steelmaking

Right across the industry, there’s plenty of talk about what the future of steelmaking looks like. Historically, the industry has been carbon intensive, but as customers across construction and infrastructure look for low-carbon materials to support their projects, steel needs to look to a cleaner future. That future is characterised by EAF technology, offering a more responsible way of producing steel. It also opens up the potential for circularity in steel production. Together, that means a reduced reliance on raw materials – and it’s a model of steel production that we’re proud to be pioneering.

A proven production model

At 7 Steel UK, our production is built for the future as we deliver on our ambition to turn potential into progress. We source, collect and process steel scrap from across the UK, utilising our network of recycling facilities to ensure a reliable supply of high-quality feedstock for our production process. From there, we use EAF technology to melt it down and form new steel, before milling and processing through 7 Steel Service to create high quality products for use across construction and infrastructure.

That is low-carbon, circular steelmaking in practice, representing a model that offers flexibility, efficiency and scalability. That means our model is capable of delivering to meet the increasing demand for UK-made steel – one of the core objectives of the new Steel Strategy.

Strengthening domestic capability

The ability to produce steel in the UK is hugely important, with our sector representing one of the core foundational industries – critical to the economy, supporting industry and communities. That importance has only become clearer in recent years as global supply chains have been disrupted, putting domestic projects at a disadvantage – whether that’s over price, availability or lead times.

Producing steel in the UK, using UK-sourced materials, creates a more resilient domestic supply chain that boasts greater levels of traceability and quality. We’re proud to be leading the way on this, delivering greater certainty for our customers across construction and infrastructure.

Boosting communities

Right across the UK, there are communities that have been defined by steelmaking. As we strengthen the industry for the future, we’re also breathing new life into these communities – alongside our industry partners. In practice, that means skilled jobs, apprenticeships and long-term careers, all of which strengthens local economies and creates opportunities for generations.

While much of the steel we produce goes into projects across the country, we’re also proud to work with industry partners in these steel communities. As we continue to invest in our facilities and our people, we are better able to support the business within steel supply chains across the UK who are vital to our processes. Together, we’ll continue to strengthen our industry.

Strengthening UK-made steel

There’s no doubt that the future is looking bright for UK steelmaking, particularly off the back of the Government’s Steel Strategy. We’re proud to be demonstrating what the future of our industry looks like, with a proven model for low-carbon steel production.

Following our first year in the UK, we’ll continue to build on the foundations we’ve created to strengthen our processes and support the UK to transition to a cleaner future for steel production.
