7 Steel UK welcomes the Government’s announcement on the future of steel safeguards, recognising it as an important step in strengthening the UK’s trade defences against global overcapacity and unfairly traded imports.
We acknowledge how challenging this process has been for Government. Ministers and officials have had to balance a wide range of competing pressures across the steel value chain, and we commend their continued engagement with industry throughout.
While today’s announcement provides greater certainty, it must be seen as part of an ongoing process. Further work will be essential to ensure the regime remains fit for purpose and fully supports a resilient and competitive UK steel and manufacturing sectors.
Crucially, the effectiveness of these safeguards will depend on how Government oversees the regime in practice. Reviews must be responsive, timely, and rooted in real market conditions.
CEO of 7 Steel UK Carles Rovira 7 said:
“This is a step in the right direction, but delivery now matters more than design. We need to continue to work with Government and support a resilient UK steel and manufacturing sector.
“Get that right, and we can protect UK capability while supporting growth across the supply chain. Get it wrong, and we risk holding back both producers and customers.”
