7 Steel Recycling: Circular Steel, Sustainable Supply

At 7 Steel UK, steel recycling is the cornerstone of our circular steel production model. Our operations recover, process, and reintroduce scrap steel into the manufacturing cycle, minimising waste, reducing emissions, and preserving natural resources.

We source scrap metal responsibly from merchants and industry across the UK. Once processed, the ferrous scrap is supplied directly to 7 Steel UK’s Electric Arc Furnace (EAF) in Cardiff, where it is melted and rolled into high-quality steel products used across large-scale UK construction projects, such as Hinkley Point.

150,000 tonnes of scrap metal recycled annually in the UK

By recycling around 150,000 tonnes of scrap steel every year, we prevent waste going to landfill, retain valuable resources, and protect the environment. Our suppliers include local merchants, trades, industrial sites, demolition and strip-out projects, municipal recycling centres, and waste management companies.

This approach ensures that steel scrap value is maximised while feeding a sustainable production cycle.

Our national recycling network

Our recycling network spans four strategically located scrap yards across the UK – in Cardiff, Avonmouth, Rotherham and Sunderland.

These locations are purposefully positioned to serve both regional suppliers and national construction, demolition, and industrial partners.

Each site is fully equipped to receive, sort, and process a wide range of ferrous and non-ferrous scrap grades, contributing to the consistent supply of raw material for our steelmaking operations.

Advanced scrap shredding technology for cleaner steel

In July 2024, we commissioned a state-of-the-art scrap shredder at our Cardiff facility, a significant investment in innovation and circularity.

This advanced plant enables us to recover more material from mixed and complex waste streams, improving scrap quality and reducing contamination before it enters the Electric Arc Furnace.

The result is cleaner steel production, lower emissions, and a more efficient recycling loop.

Our approach to sustainable, circular steel.

Steel is one of the most recycled - and recyclable - materials in the world, making it central to the global shift toward a circular economy. At 7 Steel UK, sustainability is not an add-on, but what underpins how we source, process and produce steel across the UK.

Rather than following a linear extract-consume-waste model, we focus on keeping steel in productive use for as long as possible. By recycling scrap steel back into new, high-quality products without loss of performance and integrity, we help reduce reliance on raw materials while lowering overall carbon impact.

Our approach encompasses:

1. Collection of scrap metal from UK suppliers.

2. Sorting and grading at recycling centres.

3. Shredding and preparation of material for the Electric Arc Furnace.

4. Scrap is melted in EAF, ensuring responsible recycling methods.

5. Once melted, steel billets are formed.

6. Rolling and finishing in our hot mills for downstream fabrication.

By keeping all stages domestic, we reduce transport emissions, maintain full traceability, and contribute to a low-carbon steel supply chain.

Environmental benefits of steel recycling in the UK

Steel recycling for environmental sustainability offers multiple benefits:

  • Cuts CO emissions by over 80% through the use of Electric Arc Furnace technology, compared to traditional blast furnace methods.
  • Reduces demand for virgin iron ore and natural resources.
  • Supports the circular economy by keeping material in productive use.
  • Prevents landfill waste and maximises resource efficiency.
  • Reduces the environmental impact associated with the import and export of materials

At 7 Steel UK, our recycling arm is central to our low-carbon, circular steel production, supporting the UK to achieve sustainability targets across construction and infrastructure projects.

Strengthening supply chain resilience

As global supply chains become increasingly volatile, localised recycling capability has never been more important.

By investing in domestic infrastructure and processing technology, 7 Steel UK is reinforcing the resilience of the UK’s steel supply, reducing dependence on imported materials and ensuring a secure, sustainable source of feedstock for the future.

“We believe in sustainable development that provides prospect to our future generations”

Certification

Every stage of our process meets rigorous British and European standards. We are certified to BES6001 and Eco-Reinforcement for responsible sourcing, and our rolled products are covered by verified Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs).
